Notes
I've been wanting to do this post since the beginning of the 2013 season, when I realized that the end was near for my consistent and trusty baseball companion. I felt that the only score book I've ever known in my baseball-watching consciousness deserved some sort of conclusion or look-back in commemoration. Going through all the old box scores reminded me of why I started this little endeavor in the first place -- it was great fun reliving the games and seeing the names of players in a bygone era. Okay, enough waxing nostalgic on my baseball dorkiness. Thanks to all who accompanied me on these fine afternoons and nights watching my favorite (and America's) pastime.
  • There are at least two games missing from this collection. One is the very first baseball game I ever went to. I remember being scared about being in downtown St. Louis and having only a bare bones knowledge of how the game worked. I particularly remember being confused about someone stealing a base. Cardinals got demolished 10-3 by the Pirates, some time around 1996 or 1997. I'm sure I went to a game here or there between 1998-2000, as I do remember McGwire during his glory years but those games are hazy. I also remember not keeping score for the very first Padres game I went to at Qualcomm, partly in contempt from moving, partly because I previously did not want to sully my score book with non-Cardinal games. I then quickly realized it would take forever to fill my book, and started keeping score again.
- Back when interleague play was still a novelty, one of my favorite Cardinal lineups of all-time (Vina-Polonco-Edmonds-McGwire-Pujols-Lankford-Renteria-Matheny) was utterly baffled by Tigers knuckleballer Steve Sparks.

- One of the most memorable slugfests in the height of the steroid era. Cardinal homers from the likes of JD Drew, Jim Edmonds, and a rookie Albert Pujols. A Padre lineup that featured HOFer Rickey Henderson, plus other early 2000's stalwarts such as Klesko, nevin, Bubba Trammell and a forlorn Ray Lankford. Interestingly enough, Padre legend Tony Gwynn pinch hit in this affair. Bobby J. Jones of the two Bobby Joneses started for SD, while bespectacled Chuck McElroy came in to offer no relief. Cardinals won this barnburner thanks to Mark and I telling Mac to keep on eating his peanuts when Jim Edmonds came through with a big grand slam.
- A rain delay forced Matt Morris out of this one after one inning, leading the infamous duo of Luther Hackman and TJ Matthews to team up to beat pre-steroid Eric Gagne and high-kicking Chan Ho Park.
- The tail end of the Gene Stechschulte era, ruining a good start from the fleeting but memorable Bud Smith era. I'll always remember Gene for slamming an upper deck home run on the very first pitch he saw in the major leaguers. As a middle reliever. And pinch hitter. Gotta love it. Also of note -- one of my irrational utility favorites Eli Marrero started this game at CF before moving over to left and then finishing the game at catcher. Did I mention that Miguel Cairo batted third, starting in left field in this game? Tony La Russa, everyone!
- It seemed like every year the Cards pulled an impact player out of nowhere, and this year it was Jason Simontacchi, who stood at 7-1 after this win over the Padres. Padres featured three former Cards in this game -- Ron Gant, Lankford, and the venerable Tom Lampkin.
- Mike Coolbaugh started at 3B in this game -- he later died in 2007 when he was struck by a foul ball in the head while serving as a third base coach in the minor leagues. He is the reason why all base coaches now wear batting helmets while on the field of play. Former Card Brian Jordan appeared in this game, in relief of Dave Roberts. TLR used one of his bullpen starts in this one, going with Luther Hackman before familiar names Dave Veres and Steve Kline finished it out. A 45-year old Jesse Orosco, who I will always remember for being a worthless return for one of my favorite players, Joe McEwing, tossed a scoreless inning of relief in this one.
- One of my only games at Qualcomm Stadium, Oliver Perez owned former Padre Andy Ashby.
- My first Cardinal away game. During Bo Hart's one golden year. My bad luck with Matt Morris continues as Matty Mo left after just 2/3rds of an inning due to injury. Padres featured a young Jake Peavy and former Cards Mike Matthews and Luther Hackman.
- First game at Petco Park, and first time getting on the jumbotron.
- Back when the Cubs still featured the likes of Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou, and Aramis Ramirez.
- Ismael Valdez took on Casey Fossum in this one. Enough said.
- A 105 win Cardinal team, featuring the MV3 of Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds. Sadly Cal Eldred blew it for Chris Carpenter in this one.
- Back when a random game in June still drew 41,000+ at Petco.
- The return to St. Louis, highlighted by a 100-win Cardinal team starting this fine lineup: Eckstein-Grudzielanek, Pujols, Sanders, Rolen, Edmonds, Taguchi, Molina and Matt Morris. Personal favorite and current hitting coach John Mabry comes off the bench.
- One of my favorite games ever, due to Jim Edmonds and SO TAGUCHI both hitting two homers in this game. Taguchi was about 5 feet from a third homer too. Probably my most gratifying curtain call of all-time as a fan. Jeff Suppan with a masterful 8 1/3 innings only giving up one run, finished by Ray "Burger" King.
- Probably the best pitching duel of the entire lot, with Peavy outdueling Roger Clemens. Both tossed complete games, with Peavy's 4-hitter besting Clemens. Brian Giles back when he still hit homers delivered the difference-maker.
- The 2006 World Series Champs failed to do much of anything here, with a lineup featuring the likes of Spiezio, Encarnacion, Gary Bennett and Aaron Miles. Mike Piazza homered for the Padres, and Clay Hensley pitched probably the best game of his career.
- This game was memorable for the ridiculous bombs hit off of Jake Peavy and a Mark Mulder running on fumes. Mark freaking Bellhorn slammed one 438 feet, and Josh Bard hit two. Pujols hit a bomb too, and So Taguchi continued his streak of playing well whenever I watch him, going 3/4.
- Richie Sexson had the game of his life, going 5/5 with a monstrous blast.
- Chan Ho Park reappears, this time for the Padres. John Smoltz dominates, and not for the last time against the Padres.
- Woody Williams was the only reason why this snoozefest was somewhat bearable. One of my favorites, and not just because of his alliteration.
- Future HOFer Greg Maddux still doing what he did throughout his career. Trevor Hoffman set a record for most appearances by a pitcher for one team in this one, with 803.
- So Taguchi with the crucial 3-run double, backing Braden Looper who only gave up three hits in seven innings.
- Padres get revenge in this one, with the Cardinals embarrassingly being shut down by scrub Justin Germano. Shout out to Anthony Reyes coming off of his 2006 World Series Game 1 heroics.
- Peavy was actually out-pitched by Hong-Chih Kuo in this one, back when the Dodgers still started Kuo and used Billingsley in relief.
- First trip to new Busch Stadium! And what a memorable one it was. 14-inning affair that ended with a walk-off homer from Ryan Ludwick. Cardinals somehow won this one despite pitching the likes of Todd Wellemeyer, Andy Cavazos, Russ Springer, Randy Flores, Ryan Franklin, Izzy, Troy Cate and Kip Wells. It was a down year.
- 44-year old David Wells giving up one run in 6 innings. That is all.
- First time at Angel Stadium, during freshman year at UCI.
- Pujols hit two jacks in this one, with one to the third deck of the Western Metal Building.
- Ichiro vs. Cha Seung Baek.
- Peavy - Bell - Adams - Hoffman. The golden years of the Padre bullpen.
- Maddux with his 352nd career win, starting a streak of Kevin Correia losing.
- Correia, now pitching for the Padres, one-upped by King Felix's complete game 2-hitter.
- First time seeing the vaunted New York Yankees, and their famous lineup. Robinson Cano was the 7th place hitter in that lineup, and Melky Cabrera was on the bench. And yet, the Angels won with homers from Brandon Wood and Mike Napoli. Great match-up of Jered Weaver vs. Andy Pettitte.
- This game was memorable because Rick Ankiel hit a pinch hit homer 443 feet. Colby Rasmus hit one 445, and the Cardinals notched their 10,000th win in franchise history. Oh, and Correia loses again, going down to Carp.
- This game was super memorable because the Cards had just dealt for a 42-year old John Smoltz, who promptly struck out 9 padres in 5 innings. Pujols also hit his 40th homer on August 23.
- My first playoff game, Game 2 of the 2009 NLDS. Unfortunately, this is the game that Matt Holliday dropped the ball in the 9th inning and Ryan Franklin proceeded to allow hits to Mark Loretta and Ronnie Belliard. This was the one year the Cards had both Carpenter and Wainwright, and yet they lose in the NLDS. Kershaw gives up 9 hits in this one, while Wainwright only gives up 3 hits in 8 innings. Sigh.
- Jon Garland shuts down the Cards, who waste Wainwright's 7 IP, 1 ER effort. SMH.
- Jose Bautista hit lead-off for the Jays in this one.
- I remember this being the Edge baseball game. Jered Weaver out-pitched Jeff Francis, but the other Francisco Rodriguez blew it late.
- Cards got some revenge in Dodger Stadium post-Bryan Stow. Jaime Garcia beat Hiroki Kuroda on the way to the 2011 World Series championship season. Rasmus-Pujols-Holliday-Berkman middle of the linup, plus Craig, Jay and Freese off the bench in this one.  Albert had two jacks.
- The New U game. Jered Weaver (again) with the complete game shutout, beating Gio Gonzalez.
- Kyle Lohse with a classic Lohse start. 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 K.
- Mike Trout made his major league debut in this one, going 0/3 batting 9th. The Mariners 9 hitter, Greg Halman, was murdered that following offseason in a tragic incident in his native Netherlands.
- This one was fun in that it featured Yibs, D, Mwen, Ambrose, Pappy and BLau. What a solid group.
- Cheered solely for Bryan Petersen, former UCI alum who batted second for the Marlins in this one and went 1/4.
- Trevor Hoffman retirement ceremony. What a career. Mike Stanton hit an absolute bomb for his 30th homer of the year, but Luebke-Qualls-Gregerson-Bell was better than Anibal Sanchez-Cishek-Mujica-Dunn in this one.
- Switchfoot played post-game, or else I probably wouldn't have subjected myself to a meaningless Padres-Dbacks game in late September.
- My one and only opening day, in which Clayton Kershaw had to leave early due to the flu.
- Dbacks-Padres. My least favorite match-up in all of baseball.
- This one was the UCLA Law school orientation game. Eovaldi got owned by his former team, while Hanley hit his 20th of the season against his old team.
- Dodgers walked off in the 9th off Motte.
- Another special season in Cardinal baseball history, with rookie Tyler Lyons making his major league debut and promptly brushing aside Burch Smith and the Padres.
- Shelby Miller beats Clayton Kershaw. Pete Kozma has a most-warlock like game, going 4/4 with three doubles.
- Jered Weaver and I have a date with destiny.
- Here begins all the games Jonathan got free tickets for. Heyward hit two, and Jason Marquis did his best as the Padres best FA signing of that prior offseason.
- Marquis again, taking down Stephen Fife. The Yasiel Puig show was in full force for this one. There was also three spectacular web gems from the Padres in this one.
- In which Cole Hamels and a bunch of pitchers I've never heard of beat the Padres.
- FINALLY, after all my years in Socal, the Cardinals visit Angel Stadium. The Cardinals oblige my waiting by hammering the Angels. Carpenter and Jay homer behind Shelby Miller's solid effort.
- Marquis yet again, who does okay before Gregerson blows it late.
- My first ever game at AT&T Park, a fitting end to 13 years of scorekeeping. It's a down year for the Giants not named Bumgarner.
